Editing System MIDI soundsRNS:: logo

I tried HoHo 2.2 with some MIDI alarms included in GeekSounds collection.

Almost none of them can be imported without loosing notes and/or timing (i.e. destroying them). I just wanted to change some notes in some of the tunes but found HoHo to be not enough powerful for this task. But it is a nice program anyway :-)

Can the internal HoHo format be extended to cope with relatively complex tunes from GeeekSounds collection? Is there any other tool for editing Palm MIDI database?

Ummm, I just found out it's a shareware now (3.0) and it contains MIDI editor. But it still cannot cope with the tunes in GeekSounds. Just opening and saving the files (Pink Panther L) removes some notes. It doesn't sound good afterwards.

I've installed the GeekSounds collection. Indeed, HoHo has a real problem with decoding most of them.

Looking inside, each of the Geek Sounds seems to come from another source... or at least there are a few types of "wierdness" in the collection. Most of the Geek Sounds have lots of unnecessary data included. It all seems to be really messed up so that HoHo gets confused and really strange things happen than I would never expect (eg. reading a MIDI from its middle, finding no notes in it, or reading volumes out-of-range).

The truth is that MIDI playing functions included in Palm OS (called by "Play MIDI" button in HoHo's MIDI Manager) are most liberal and can suck out MIDI data out of every file resembling SMF0. Geek Souns just benefit from this feature. On the other hand, HoHo believes that Imported/Edited MIDI files are fully compatible with SMF0 - any little difference - and you see what happens.

Now I'll try to get deep into Geek Sounds, study them byte-by-byte, and compare with the SMF0 speciffication to see if it wasn't me who missed something important.

Anyway I have to criticise Geek Sounds (though good for playback) for the mess they are themselves. As soon as I manage to read them with HoHo, I'll try to standardise them, and I expect to shrink their size by about 20%. That's because HoHo stores only the necessary data needed to save and then play SMF0 files.

Good news!
I've added the support of all the additional MIDI events and finally HoHo is able to read and write every Geek Sound.

If you edit a typical Geek Sound and save it "without a modification", its size reduces by 10-30%. It's done without mucisal data loss.

So, everybody: stay tune and await version 3.1, soon!

OK!
Now there's HoHo version 3.1 available.

It's MIDI decoding engine fully supports every Geek Sound (and not only)!

Great! Well done. I'll try it. Thanks.

I downloaded Geek Sounds, I am a registered 3.1 HoHo user, but HoHo doesn't detect ANY of the Geek Sounds in the System Midi Sounds file on the Palm. I want to import and edit some of these sounds to shorten them up. Can this program do it or not?

You cannot see or cannot import any of them?

Perhaps you have not selected the right database? When in MIDI Manager, please choose "System" or "Alarms" (depending on version) from the menu.

Perhaps you are using an older MIDI Import or/and MIDI Manager Plug-In? Try those from HoHo version 3.1 or 3.1.1.
