HoHo's MIDI Import Plug-in usage tips
- The phrase "MIDI file" used below refers to a MIDI alarm, a MIDI ringtone, etc. stored in a MIDI database in the main memory of a Palm OS handheld.
- Importing MIDI files, is in fact converting them to one of the cell phone formats supported by HoHo (or to the HoHo native format).
- In order to import a MIDI file, do the following:
- Install the MIDI Import Plug-in and the MIDI Manager Plug-in. You can find their prc files in the package together with main HoHo prc.
- Launch HoHo.
- Open the Options menu and choose the MIDI Manager command. Alternatively you may use the /M shortcut.
- If you need to change a MIDI Database from which you will import, choose it from the drop-down list in the MIDI Manager.
- Select a MIDI file to import and tap the More... button followed by the Import... command.
- Experiment with different settings in the windows that appear so as to get the most accurate effect.
- The MIDI file is converted to the selected Format.
- Never get discouraged if the MIDI file that you import does not exactly sound as the original one. To tune it up, follow these tips:
- Even though the best settings are automatically selected, experiment with different settings while importing.
- Read the help messages that are available through the
icon in every window during the import process.
- When you have already imported a MIDI file, adjust the playing speed, octave, and perhaps increase the volume.
- Some MIDI files were created to be played legato. If you find delays between notes too long, go to HoHo Preferences and select the "Continuous playback (legato)" checkbox.
- Do not import any MIDI files if the selected format is a progressive format (currently only the "Nokia Keys" format is progressive). Instead import to another format (e.g. "HoHo") and then just convert the ringtone.
- Yes, MIDI files first imported and then exported back to MIDI, lose some of the music information. The same happens if ringtones are exported to MIDI and then imported back. This problem has been overcome with the introduction of MIDI Editor Plug-in (with 3.0 version).
